The Sarcophagus of Marcia Romania Celsa: Detail, Lazarus

Circa 330
Musée de l'Arles Antique, Arles

In his right hand Jesus holds a wand, now damaged, signifying his authority. The person at his feet is Lazarus's sister Martha (John 11:20-21). As usual in this period Lazarus is pictured erect in his grave clothes in a tomb shaped like a temple.
